Or else you might buy a smaller house for sale in Chicago that needs some work. You'll build sweat equity as you return it to it's former glory. While being smaller should make it easier to sell since it will demand a lower price than the other larger homes on the block.
If you don't take that tact, at least make sure the house you do buy has no hidden defects that could cost you a bundle to fix. Which would only make paying full value that much harder to take. So get it professionally inspected to make sure.
In any case if you plan on staying in a place at least five years, you'll be able to ride out any temporary dips in value with no problem. Leaving you to safely ignore all the noise about housing prices.
