Sydney Howard, a health care analyst at a local hospital, wanted in. She was sick of apartments. Suburban Chicago housing beckoned seductively. And even though the 29 year old was by herself she wanted to grab her slice of the American dream.

By watching her pennies the Cubs fanatic had somehow managed to scrap together the 5% to put down on Chicago real estate. All by simply doing such unexciting things as brown bagging lunch and forgoing too many dinners out. While hoping and praying her 1997 Civic would last another year or so. In other words doing what it took to get into a Chicago property she could call home. Granted, apartments serve a purpose. But they simply can't take the place of a home of your own. Like many single professional women Sydney was drawn toward the condo lifestyle. Knowing that end of the Chicago real estate market is more carefree with less maintenance. But that doesn't mean she didn't at least consider some of the homes for sale in the MLS. But she just couldn't see herself coming home at night and cutting the grass. |
Did You Know? The Chicago Sun Times reported that "single women have become a powerful demographic in the real estate market." Due to the fact that Chicago real estate financing is better geared toward their needs "21 percent of all home buyers were single females" in 2005.
Sydney's condominium choice shouldn't be surprising. It's an affordable option many first timer buyers should consider, married or not.
Then too, given Chicago real estate prices others may look at joint tenancy with siblings.
Or some of the more handy among us might take a slightly different tact. They might look for homes that need some TLC. Just be sure you're really getting bargain Chicago real estate and aren't paying the same as you would for a property that's move in ready.
Anyway many younger professionals like Sydney, are eager to purchase their first homes. To join them you just need to get past the fear factor, do a little bit of homework and get your financial house in order. Then you too can realize your dream of home ownership.
